Meet Bryan

Meet Bryan

Bryan Hartzler, RPT, has been a woodworker for as long as he can remember. After graduating from The Ohio State University with a BA in piano, Bryan decided to combine his two passions by becoming a piano technician. He studied at the North Bennett Street School in Boston, MA, where he earned a certificate of piano technology. While still a student, Bryan passed the RPT exam with a nearly perfect score.

Bryan Hartzler has worked for the Aspen Music Festival and School in Aspen, CO; the Columbus Symphony Orchestra; the Boulder Philharmonic; the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra; Ohio Wesleyan University; Denison University; and for top pianists in Central Ohio.

What is the North Bennett Street School?

The North Bennett Street School in Boston is one of only two brick and mortar schools in North America for the study of piano technology. It is NOT an on-line curriculum, but a hands-on program with some of the best piano technicians in the country as instructors. NBSS students have the opportunity to intern at prestigious music colleges in the Boston area such as the New England Conservatory of Music.

Other programs at NBSS include violin making, jewelry making, book binding, and preservation carpentry.

What does RPT mean?

When you hire an RPT, you can be sure the work will be done right. Only piano technicians who have passed a rigorous three part test (a written test, tuning, and repair) and must remain in good standing with their local chapter may use the RPT designation. For a detailed description of the exam, please click here

The Piano Technicians Guild is the national organization that confers RPT status, offers continuing education, and maintains standards within the trade. Bryan Hartzler is a member of the Central Ohio chapter of the PTG. He often opens up his workshop for meetings and technical instruction for the other members.
